‘The Conjuring’ Series At HBO Max Finally Moving Forward With Showrunner Nancy Won

With “IT: Welcome To Derry” making its debut on HBO Max next month, another Warner Bros./New Line Cinema horror franchise series is moving forward, as “The Conjuring” series is finally coming together, and they’ve hired a creative team to tackle it.

It has been a couple of years since the project set The Conjuring Universe was first reported to be in development and there hasn’t been much in the way of updates. But according to a report from Variety, HBO Max has landed a showrunner and executive producer with Nancy Won (“Jessica Jones”).

Fellow Marvel Studios alumn Peter Cameron (“Agatha All Along,” “Moon Knight,” “Werewolf By Night,” “WandaVision”) and Cameron Squires (“Agatha All Along,” “WandaVision,” “The Acolyte”) are also set to write on the show.

The Conjuring Universe first launched back in 2013 with James Wan‘s first installment, as it explored the paranormal investigator couple, The Warrens (played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson), in real life, con-artists, but the movies would attempt to theorize what their “cases” would be like if they had been actually dealing with demon possessions and hauntings.

That original movie became a hit and ended up turning into a horror franchise for New Line by spawing another eight films including sequels and spinoffs such as “Annabelle,” “The Conjuring 2,” “Annabelle Creation,” “The Nun,” “Annabelle: Creation,” “The Nun,” “Annabelle Comes Home,” “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” “The Nun II,” and the most recent release, “The Conjuring: Last Rites.”

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Television are behind the new series, as DC Studios‘ co-head Peter Safran is executive producing, while Wan’s Atomic Monster (acquired by Blumhouse) is producing as well.

While details are being kept in the crypt, it’s being described as “a continuation of the story” established in the films, which likely means The Warrens could be involved.

“Last Rites” opened to a solid $84 million domestically over the weekend with a current global total of $194 million, which seems to have proved there is still a huge demand for this franchise beyond the latest feature film.
