“Alien” franchise star Sigourney Weaver is out promoting her new movie “Dust Bunny,” in which he co-stars with Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, as the Bryan Fuller-directed genre-bending pic is screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. The actress was asked about her impressions of Noah Hawley‘s new Earthbound streaming series, “Alien: Earth.”
Speaking with People Magazine, Weaver has shared her take on the mostly Earthbound spinoff series (episode 5 tackles the fate of the science ship that had collected multiple alien species before crash landing) and gushed about it being much more than just another “Alien” movie, spotlighting the show’s “scope” alongside how the android hybrids and other alien creatures are part of making it different enough to what has been done before.
“What I admire about it is the scope is so much more profound than just an Alien movie,” Weaver said. “It’s about our world and what’s dominating the world in 100 years, and to me it’s right on…All these things are so remarkable, and they’re just building and building and building,” she added. “And the monsters that he’s also bringing in are just terrifying. It’s like, we don’t have enough problems with the alien, we need 50 more…I can’t believe I’m watching TV.”
Interestingly enough, fans may remember that the original plans for David Fincher‘s “Alien 3” were that it was going to be set on Earth (as teased by 20th Century Fox marketing via a teaser trailer before the film was shot and a tie-in Pepsi ad), and ultimately, Weaver talked producers out of the idea, leading to the off-world prison colony setting. Eventually, we got to see Earth in “Alien Resurrection” as another ship was set to crash-land into Earth, and the human survivors (including a clone of Ellen Ripley that has Xenomorph DNA mixed in and a hybrid android named Call) got to land in a destroyed Paris in 2381 safely.
So, Weaver sharing high praise for the show is certainly great to hear, and it’s hard not to, given how often Hawley’s team attempts to add new ideas/lore to the franchise. There are plenty of new things to enjoy for audiences and not just die-hard fans.
There is an expectation that “Alien: Earth” is aiming to get multiple seasons (going by previous statements made by Hawley), and with its solid viewership, we’re likely not too far away from FX making that Season 2 announcement. Hawley has teased that the show could end up smacking directly into the events of LV-426 (location of the original alien ship and egg hatchery) and might explain the motivations of Weyland-Yutani in the first two movies as they pressed expendable groups of humans to collect the Xenomorph for their bio-weapons division. Without spoiling what is going on in the show, the seeds are being planted for all sorts of connective tissue to the other movies.
“Dust Bunny” is heading to theaters on December 5, and “Alien: Earth” is currently streaming exclusively on Disney+/Hulu.
