Scarlett Johansson Stars In New Prada Ad From ‘Poor Things’ Director Yorgos Lanthimos

Not exactly the duo we would automatically think of working together, but actress Scarlett Johansson and Oscar-nominated director Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”) have teamed up for a quirky ad for Italian luxury fashion house Prada.

Promoting Prada‘s designer handbags, the ad features Johansson (notably, already an established brand ambassador) going over various rituals leading to multiple versions of the actress.

“For this Prada campaign, Lanthimos envisaged, I play a version of myself,” Johansson told Harper’s Bazaar in their profile for the Prada ad, “I think the idea—the poetry—of that was that I was playing many people at the same time. The result portrays the duality that exists inside all of us. I think a lot of Yorgos’ work centers around that theme—duality, fractured identities. This was really an exploration for him to continue in interrogating that idea.”

A logline for the new Prada ad:

Discover the new Prada campaign directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Prada Ambassador Scarlett Johansson. A cinematic study of transformation and persona, where ritual identities take place. A totem of change, the Prada Galleria handbag is reimagined season after season. In this film, it becomes central to a story of perpetual transformation – of the self, of identity, of Prada itself.

Lantinmos’ latest feature film effort, “Bugonia,” an English-language remake of the Korean sci-fi movie “Save The Green Planet!,” starring muse and Oscar-winner Emma Stone, is being released by Focus Features on October 24 after debuting last month during the Venice Film Festival.

Also, Johansson is making her own push to direct with her debut June Squibb-led film “Eleanor The Great,” hitting theaters on September 26. This summer, she had starred in Gareth Edwards‘ “Jurassic World Rebirth” that ended up making Universal Pictures a heap of cash at the international box office (an impressive $864 million globally), making it one of the most successful event releases from Hollywood of the summer blockbuster season.
