Danish filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen is behind the new dark comedy “The Last Viking,” starring Mads Mikkelsen (“Another Round”) and Nikolaj Lie Kaas. We can now share a new trailer for the pic that focuses on two characters, one an ex-prisoner, trying to recover buried loot from a heist.

Here is a logline for “The Last Viking,” written and directed by Jensen:

Anker is released from prison after a fifteen-year sentence for robbery. The money from the heist was buried by his brother, Manfred. Only he knows where it is. Unfortunately, Manfred has since developed a mental disorder, causing him to forget everything. Together, the brothers embark on an unexpected journey to locate the money — and discover who they really are. Den sidste viking is a humorous, intriguing, and devious tale about identity.

Mikkelsen is busy as a bee with multiple projects aside from “The Last Viking” on the horizon, such as the monster under the bed movie “Dust Bunny” (also TIFF-bound) that reunites him with Brad Fuller after working together on “Hannibal.” Some other films in the works include the death row chef drama “Last Meals” and the survival action thriller “Sirius.”

“‘Den sidste viking” is a dark fable with a comical undertone about identity. The film explores how our identities are shaped by others’ perceptions, with the hope that, despite challenges, we can discover our true selves. The focus is on being who you truly want to be. The film highlights that people are more than one thing, encouraging a more holistic outlook that is inherently more forgiving and less judgmental. Also, if you know you are more than one thing, you won’t be as easily offended or take things to heart,” Jensen said in an official statement on the film.

Check out that trailer for “The Last Viking” below, as it is part of the lineup of films screening at both the Toronto International Film Festival and Venice Film Festival.
