Patrick Stewart Hints Reprising Professor X Beyond 'Doctor Strange 2'

As you should know by now, given all the trailers and all the stories about it on the internet, Patrick Stewart is reprising his “X-Men” character Professor X in Marvel‘s “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness.” That’s all we’ll say, for this moment, but suffice to say potential spoilers going forward.

While the character had died at the hands of a Wolverine clone in James Mangold‘s “Logan,” he’s back in ‘Strange 2’ as a variant multiverse character who is also a member of the Illuminati. While we won’t risk spoiling more, is there a chance of seeing this Professor X again or any other variant?

Variety recently asked Stewart about the possibility of seeing more of Charles Xavier in the future, and the British actor said he wasn’t ready to close the door on playing the telepathic mutant patriarch. He even hinted there could be more opportunities.

“Charles Xavier? Yeah. There may be. You know, the whole ‘X-Men’ comic series is so huge, so vast, there might be an opportunity in which he comes back. We’ll see,” Stewart told Variety.

The actor also reflected on finally getting the chance to use Xavier’s classic yellow hover chair from the comics and animated series, given that Bryan Singer‘s version of the movie franchise largely resisted using comic book-y design elements like Xavier’s iconic chair.

“Yes! It was very unlike the Porsche that I was driving in the films. That was a very fast, very manipulative wheelchair. And when I first saw the monster that I was going to be driving in this one, I was dismayed. But it was fine. It worked very well. I had to bring it to a stop before a flight of stairs. That was my only concern was that I would somehow get out of control and go all the way down the stairs in this thing! But it was a very, very different world from the ‘X-Men’ movies, with references here and there, of course. But I was very, very happy.”

Could Marvel build their new “X-Men” reboot lineup around Stewart’s version of Xavier? That seems unlikely as Marvel is likely heading in a new direction, but who knows, anything is possible at this point.

“Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” is currently playing in theaters.
