After reportedly eyeing a key role in Luca Guadagnino‘s upcoming OpenAI biopic for weeks, recent Oscar-nominee Monica Barbaro has signed on to star opposite Andrew Garfield in “Artificial” at Amazon MGM Studios.
The casting update hails from Variety, as the rest of the cast of the new Guadagnino film includes “Anora” breakout Yura Borisov, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Hoffman, and Cooper Koch. While he hasn’t officially signed on, comedian Ike Barinholtz of “The Studio” is still circling the project for the role of billionaire tech-bro and oddball firebrand, Elon Musk.
“Artificial,” described as a comedic drama, will follow the events surrounding the firing and speedy rehiring of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who Garfield will play. A notorious tech company is at the forefront of the modern push for the advancement of artificial intelligence programs and other applications.
Barbaro had earned an Oscar nomination for her performance as folk singer Joan Baez in James Mangold‘s “A Complete Unknown,” after playing the hot-shot Naval pilot Phoenix in the Paramount blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.” This won’t be the only project with Amazon MGM Studios, as she’ll appear in “Crime 101” opposite Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Barry Keoghan. The actress also co-stars with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the spy comedy series “FUBAR,” which has been granted two seasons by Netflix.
There is an expectation that Barbaro has been cast in the part of OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, in the pic.
Guadagnino is also putting together his grieving drama “Separate Rooms” and a gestating remake of the satirical serial killer thriller “American Psycho” at Lionsgate (the studio said to be poised for a potential acquisition by Legendary).
