“Anyone But You” director Will Gluck has found a new romance project with “One Night Only” that will star recent Oscar-nominee Monica Barbaro (“A Complete Unknown”) and rising talent Callum Turner (“Green Room”).
This casting news hails from Deadline, adding that the movie is set at Universal Pictures. As the outlet mentions, the original draft of Travis Braun‘s Black List script for “One Night Only” would follow “two strangers who scramble to find someone to sleep with on the one night of the year when premarital sex is legal.”
The film’s brief elevator pitch certainly comes off like it has a bit of a sci-fi/dystopian angle you’d likely see in an episode of “Black Mirror,” as the project is set in a world where there is one night during the year when premarital sex is permitted and we’re not exactly sure the reasoning behind that restrictive law or what the setting will look like (distant/near future or not).
Barbaro is on the rise after a breakout role in “Top Gun: Maverick” and earning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for playing folk singer Joan Baez in James Mangold‘s acclaimed Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown.” Some of the other movies she has attached to are Luca Guadagnino‘s comedic OpenAI movie “Artificial“ starring opposite Andrew Garfield, and there is also expectation that she’ll be returning as the hotshot female combat pilot Phoenix for “Top Gun 3” at Paramount.
Turner has previously starred in things like the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-produced WWII pilot drama series “Masters of The Air,” “The Boys In The Boat,” Jeremy Saulnier‘s punk band versus Neo-Nazis thriller “Green Room,” the two “Fantastic Beasts” sequels set in the Potterverse, and also leads the upcoming high-profile Prime Video cyberpunk series “Neuromancer,” based on the heavily influential William Gibson novel (inspired things like “The Matrix” movies).
Universal is said to be aiming to release “One Night Only” on August 7, 2026, although that could be subject to change. Stay tuned for further plot details and casting announcements.
