James Gunn Teases Superman Villain Brainiac For His Follow-Up ‘Man Of Tomorrow’

Yesterday, writer/director James Gunn posted an image of his script for “Man of Tomorrow,” the follow-up film to “Superman” that will see Clark Kent and Lex Luthor joining forces to combat a greater threat to Earth. An illustration on that script features what looks to be a medical image of an exposed brain is a very obvious tease that DC Comics supervillain Brainiac is finally making his big screen debut in the DCU sequel.

Superman’s iconic artificial intelligence comic book villain, Brainiac, is a combination of cosmic and Kryptonian technology and nearly became the antagonist of Tim Burton‘s never-made “Superman Lives” movie from the 1990s that once had Nicolas Cage in the cape, and he appeared in live-action form in the David S. Goyer series “Krypton” (variants were part of the CW shows as well).

Brainiac’s ship houses all sorts of deadly alien species in his menagerie that could be unleashed upon Earth (perhaps, other alien villains had been captured by him?), or he wants to add the planet to his collection. His exact intentions in “Man of Tomorrow” remain to be seen, but will likely come into light down the line.

Gunn over the summer confirmed to the podcast “Happy Sad Confused” that the DC villain had been “considered” for the first installment. That gave us an early hint that he could be used for the “Man of Tomorrow” (set for release on July 9, 2027) or other DCU projects.

We’re not only expecting to see the return of Milly Alcock‘s Supergirl and The Justice Gang (previously alluded to by Gunn) in the team-up feature film, but there is a slim chance that Jason Momoa‘s alien bounty hunter Lobo could be showing up as well after being introduced in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” next year.

A tease isn’t entirely confirmation, but it’s looking good that Earth’s heroes will have to make an awkward alliance with a dastardly baddie like Lex Luthor (confirmed to be using his Warsuit in the flick) to combat an even bigger threat like Brainiac.
