Zach Cregger Clarifies That His DC Universe Project ‘Henchmen’ Is “Not Joker & Harley Quinn Script”

There has been a lot of speculation about filmmaker Zach Cregger‘s (“Weapons“) DC Comics script, which he admittedly confirmed previously was indeed “Batman adjacent” and set in Gotham City. However, Cregger has come out to refute some claims about it, mainly rumblings about established DC villains being the main focus.

Cregger tried to clarify all this in a recent interview on the YouTube podcast “Double Toasted” that “Henchmen,” despite what is being said online, was “not a Joker and Harley Quinn script.” Also, he’s been too busy to consider reviving the idea and hasn’t even spoken to James Gunn/DC Studios about his old DC Universe script.

“This is funny. This has been blown out of proportion online. So, yeah, I wrote ‘Henchmen’, which is a story that takes place in the DC Universe like YEARS before I wrote ‘Barbarian’, and I really love it. But it’s not a Joker and Harley script, I’ve seen that online. And, no, I haven’t talked to James Gunn about it. I haven’t really talked to anyone at [DC Studios] about it because, you know, as much as I love that story, I have ‘Resident Evil’ in front of me and then there’s this sci-fi movie I’m looking to make after ‘Resident Evil’ that I also wrote a long time ago…That’s going to take up a couple years of my life right there. So, there’s no point of me running around to set this sail up, right now,” Cregger said of the confusion surrounding his very old DC script, which doesn’t have any real interest from anyone over at DC/WB.

He finally ended with, “I think because it’s such a fun playground, people have written a lot about it online, and not much of that is true.”

Of course, as mentioned, he’s in Resident Evil” mode with Cregger’s remake at Sony Pictures (begins shooting next month in Prague until sometime in January, according to Cregger) and his mysterious sci-fi project “Flood” that is expected to go after the T-virus survival horror pic that would reunite him with “Weapons” and “The Walking Dead” actor Austin Abrams.

Again, it very much sounds like “Henchmen” might not see the light of day, and Cregger has obviously moved on since with both “Barbarian” and “Weapons” opening a lot of doors for the director. So, with his aim to tackle that sci-fi movie after “Resident Evil,” there doesn’t seem to be much interest in circling back to his old DC Universe script anytime soon.
